| Even
with the freedom afforded by scuba-apparatus the wreck of
the Dakota remains a challenging dive-site, with
visibility often approaching zero., no low-water slack
period and tides nearing 5kn on springs.
However,
with experience, it can be done. Elfyn Jones (PADI
instructor)and Terry Stoker (BSAC-sport-diver), both of
Amlwch, realised it's potential in 1996 and built a boat
to do the job- the JULIE-ANNE.
Starting
with a 21ft dory, then a 28ft steel workboat which they nearly sank, they started
revealing some interesting bits of cargo- bottles of wine
and cognac, earthenware and perfume.
They
decided it might be wise to invest some more time, money
and effort into the project so an ex-Canberra lifeboat was
fitted-out for the job and air-lifts and compressors were
built.
After
3-years of hard work, diving throughout the year,
recovering port-holes, oil-lamps, cutlery, rolls of
fabric, a bronze sculpture, wine, cognac and perfume, the
Dakota finally began to reveal its cargo of valuable
tin-ingots
