Big Tides, mixed bags

We’ve had some big spring tides this week that has restricted much of our fishing to a variety of inshore marks. Fortunately with most days clam and sunny, we’ve ailed and enjoyed a good mixed bag of fish.  Drifting has seen an abundance of small pollack to 3/4lb. Vast majority around the 1lb mark and often 3 or more at a time to scratch rigs or feathers. Mixed in with the pollack we’ve had a few coalfish, ballan & cuckoo wrasse, herring and mackerel.  At anchor, again a good mixed bag. A plentiful amount of rays and huss keeping everyone […]

Weekend fishing

Last weekend we basked once again in some welcome sunshine coupled with good fishing.     The ray fishing has been superb, with an abundance of thornbacks being caught. Holyhead Deep has also been kind with some big spurdogs, huss and strap conger. Close inshore has seen a plentiful amount of pollack to 4lb with a few mackerel, herring and wrasse when on the drift. Inshore anchor is slowly picking up as the influx of species continues with dogs, huss, dab, whiting, gurnard, smoothhound and the odd mini species adding to the count. Great fishing continues

Our return to Holyhead has been fortunate to coincide with some lovely weather, helping us get out and amongst some good fish. Inshore we’ve seen plenty of small pollack up to 4lb, coalies similar along with a few ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse with mackerel, herring and minis too.  The main part of recent trips has been an anchor in Holyhead Deep – with plenty of spurs and huss keeping anglers occupied with a couple small tope too.  More photos in Gallery 263 COVID19 Information pack

Monster Eel

Monster from the deep for Wirral based Mickey Duff.   With the body thicker than my thigh and me having to stand on a seat box to weigh, the scales failed at 50lb.   Note to self, get bigger scales!   Popular estimate from other skippers 60 – 70 lb – whopper! First trip from Holyhead 2021

Calm seas, sunshine and a great crew for our first day afloat from Holyhead in 2021. Inshore was as predicted dogs, whiting, small huss, pout and pollack. Despite the spring tide we opted for a trip to the deeps over slack water. A strong run of tide yielded some big huss to start and as the water slackened spurdogs came on the feed. Couldn’t have asked for a better return. Weather, fishing and a totally Motley Crue. I’ve had a blast thanks to the lads aboard today. More photos in Gallery 263 COVID19 Information pack

April Spurdogs

We return to Holyhead this coming April, amongst the numerous species to be caught we will also see some large packs of spurdog with a good few pack tope too. The spurdog is a popular specie to catch during early spring, putting up a spirited fight with sizes regularly into the mid teens with a few breaking records at 20lb plus. Although packs move through most of the year, spurdog fishing generally kicks off around March time for big specimens with the best fishing to be had the following two months. Plenty of spurdogs are still around right through to […]
