Monster from the deep for Wirral based Mickey Duff. With the body thicker than my thigh and me having to stand on a seat box to weigh, the scales failed at 50lb. Note to self, get bigger scales! July! A month once again blighted by wind. Seems to be the most common factor in reports this year yet again. But, where possible we have sailed and enjoyed some great sport inshore and especially out in Holyhead Deep. The first few trips we remained inshore, with winds and tides restricting movement. Our rewards were some good mixed days with a variety of species including plenty of smoothhounds. With a long sleek, scale less body, an upper jaw extending beyond it’s lower, there is not much to mistake a conger eel with. The colour of a conger can vary slightly depending on the ground it inhabits, but tends to be from a light to a dark grey/black appearance. The dorsal fin on a conger starts at the pectoral fins, and runs the length of its body. The British record for a conger eel is in excess of 130lb, although there have been commercially caught eels recorded over 250lb. The congers tend to inhabit very rough and rocky areas. […]
