Monster Eel

Monster from the deep for Wirral based Mickey Duff.   With the body thicker than my thigh and me having to stand on a seat box to weigh, the scales failed at 50lb.   Note to self, get bigger scales!   Popular estimate from other skippers 60 – 70 lb – whopper! Rough Ground Conger

This article was written for Boat Fishing Monthly magazine and can be found in the November 2012 issue. Conger fishing, especially for the bigger specimens approaching 100lb is best undertaken along the south coast of the UK, fishing into some of the big sunken wrecks in the English Channel. Many eels however are caught from around the North West Wales coast and from the wrecks in the Irish Sea and Liverpool bay on a regular basis. The current British boat record for a conger eel stands at 133lb taken from Devon in 1995. Whilst the Welsh boat record pales slightly […]

Holyhead General Fishing – Part 1

The vast majority of experienced anglers have a specific target in mind when they book a day out boat fishing. Sadly though, we have a number of external influences on our sport such as particular time of year, large tidal range and worst of all the good old British weather.   Despite all our best plans, we can’t always target the species we enjoy catching the most. Never the less, most anglers are willing to take the rough with the smooth and assuming here that a day afloat can still be had will quickly adjust their armoury with a selection […]

The welsh record though is there for the taking, and with eels to 50lb coming […]

July 2016

July! A month once again blighted by wind. Seems to be the most common factor in reports this year yet again. But, where possible we have sailed and enjoyed some great sport inshore and especially out in Holyhead Deep. The first few trips we remained inshore, with winds and tides restricting movement. Our rewards were some good mixed days with a variety of species including plenty of smoothhounds. I spend a fair amount of time drifting around our coastline in search of pollack, coalies, codling and my favourites when drifting inshore the various members of the wrasse family. On the […]

Conger Eel

With a long sleek, scale less body, an upper jaw extending beyond it’s lower, there is not much to mistake a conger eel with. The colour of a conger can vary slightly depending on the ground it inhabits, but tends to be from a light to a dark grey/black appearance. The dorsal fin on a conger starts at the pectoral fins, and runs the length of its body. The British record for a conger eel is in excess of 130lb, although there have been commercially caught eels recorded over 250lb. The congers tend to inhabit very rough and rocky areas. […]
