Smoothhound Challenge Day One

Our annual Smoothhound Challenge sponsored by PENN kicked off on Weds with yet another ever changing forecast. Setting sail early morning the light winds turned into strong onshore west winds that kept everyone on their toes as the boat moved in the tide. Never the less, we battled on and caught a good few hounds. Our total for the day was 36, however the majority were well below a My Way average at around 8lb. We managed a few double figures with Danny Lewis coming up trumps at 13lb 8oz winning him a PENN WRATH Bolescopic rod and PENN BATTLE […]

PENN Smoothhound Challenge day four

It was the 4th day of our Smoothhound Challenge week last Friday. Sponsored by PENN Fishing the aim to catch the heaviest hound to win a new PENN Wrath rod and reel combo. The stamp of fish has been generally quite low this year, with an average size of 8lb. However we’ve had some good mid and high teens through the week to keep the excitement and anticipation going. Friday returned over 30 hounds with the eventual winner Anglesey Angler Mark Cain with a hound of 14lb.

PENN Smoothhound Challenge day one

Great start to our Smoothhound Challenge week today. Sponsored by PENN Fishing and in its 10th year, the aim each day is to catch the heaviest hound to win a new rod and reel combo. The weather settled from the storms of last week but I must admit an anxious feeling as to how the hound fishing would be. They’ve been a little elusive the last couple weeks, so I feared a slow day. Thankfully they received my email, just under 40 hounds landed today. The majority far too small by our own standards at between 5 – 8lb with […]

Pure Fishing Smoothhound Challenge – day three

Last Weds 29th May, we had the third of this years Pure Fishing Smoothhound Challenges. It was a day to remember for sure, not really for the best reasons. Weather double what was forecast, torrential rain and a lack of hounds made for a frustrating day for all involved. Still everyone struggled on and Mersey based angler Chris came out the eventual winner with a hound of 9lb. Credit to Chris, who fought through some serious sea sickness to continue fishing and take the prize that day. As always big thanks to our sponsors at Pure Fishing UK Ltd for […]

Pure Fishing Smoothhound Challenge – day two

Me and my big mouth in closing after day one looking forward to better weather for day two in our competition . 17-20mph north winds not the best, but workable with a decreasing forecast. The morning we were greeted with 22-30mph. After poking our nose around the breakwater, we came back in! Tea, coffee, chit chat and putting the world to rights, been a fun morning 😁 With easing winds after lunch we headed back out and set the crabs to do their thing.18hounds caught our total, all of them bar a couple between 6 an 8lb, real small sharks compared […]
