Wrecking with Greys® & PENN®

Amongst the various rods available aboard My Way 2, we’ve had the 20lb class GR100S boat rod available to our anglers for the last couple years, with them accounting for countless species including big tope, hounds and rays. There are a total of 4 rods in the GR100S boat range – 8, 12, 20 and 30lb class.

Impressed with the 20lb class rod, reviewed last February, we recently invested in some of the 12lb class. These rods we particularly wanted for our anglers to try out and experience the thrill of a light rod that still retained the ability to heave up large pollack, cod and coalies from 350ft of water when drifting over the countless sunken vessels that litter the Irish sea during our wreck fishing trips.

All 4 rods in the range feature

  • TOREON® Nano Composite
  • Lightweight, slim diameter
  • Long tip, short butt for maximum compression performance
  • Fuji (BNOG) guide and reel seat
  • Fighting foregrip

The 12lb class benefits further from one extra intermediate ring to ensure a perfect balance to this lighter rod when compressed. And as with all the range the sensitive tip allows you to detect bites immediately and then when hooked up the progressive nature of the rod slowly bends to exert maximum pressure when required from partway down the tip section.

From our selection of reels, we paired the 12lb with a PENN FATHOM 15LD 2 speed and the 20lb class rod with PENN Slammer III 5500 Fixed Spool reel

The PENN FATHOM Lever Drag 2 speed series of reels allow the angler to change the speed of retrieve quickly ensuring complete control when fighting a hard fighting fish or retrieving heavy terminal tackle from far below.

Simply push in the button at the base of the reel handle to drop down in gear, for the PENN FATHOM 15 lever drag 2 speed  from 6.1:1 to utilise the lower gear ratio of 2.8:1. A quick twist on the button and the reel is back in the higher gearing.

Line capacity is impressive for a small, strong and robust reel with 550yards of 20lb braid, 415yards of 30lb or 290 yards of 50lb braid.

The PENN Slammer III 5500 reel has a braid capacity of 500yards/20lb  380yards/30lb  335yards/40lb and a maximum drag pressure of 40lb. With a retrieve ratio of 5.6:1 it is an ideal reel for those who prefer a fixed spool and wanting something capable of fighting the many small sharks available around our coast or battle double figure fish from the wrecks.

  • Full Metal Body, sideplate, and rotor
  • CNC Gear? technology
  • IPX6 Sealed body and spool design
  • Sealed Slammer? drag system with Dura-Drag?
  • 6+1 stainless steel bearing system

Both combinations accounting for some impressive fishing over the last few days
